What is an SSD?
An SSD (Solid State Drive) is the next generation of storage that replace traditional hard drives, which have been standard in computers since the early 1990's. When installed inside your Mac, an SSD would hold your Mac's operating system, applications, documents, photos and more. Unlike hard drives, solid state drives have no moving parts, fail less often, and generally consume less power. iPads, iPhones and USB Drives use similar technology.
Why would I want one?
They're super fast. SSD's are multiple times faster than their hard drive predecessors. If your Mac is running slowly, takes a long time to start-up and run applications, or you see the spinning coloured wheel far too often, then an SSD may be exactly what you need. Even with older machines, the performance increase is dramatic.
For comparison, an average iMac hard drive runs at about 60MB/s (21.5") to 120MB/s (27"), whereas SSD's can achieve well over 500MB/s. That's a 4-8x difference!
